Uganda, the pearl of Africa is considered a safe destination based on the insights of most of the former travelers. But this should not fool you into thinking that Uganda does not have any cases to take caution of, and assume that no single crime happens in Uganda. Amidst of the hospitality, the lovely smiles and courtesy of the Ugandan people, it should be noted there a places that you should avoid if you can. Surprisingly, those places are not always bad but it is usually the time of the day that makes some places either bad or good.

These places usually have no issues during the day. You can drive there freely. You will find roadblocks some of which will be for the Uganda revenue authority and other law enforcement organs. But at night, the same places the seem secure turn into scam hubs. If you are driving on these road, never stop at night even if you see a police officer or an army office. Even if they are two police officers with in the same radius, never stop. Only stop when you see a real roadblock with three or more police officers.

Walking On Kampala Streets Alone After Dark More So Kampala Down Town

There is a lot of pick pocketing during the rush hour between 6:00pm and 10:00pm in the night. The streets are often very busy during this time and so are the pick pocketers. You will do well watching your pockets while walking on Kampala streets during this time. Kampala up town is a beat different. You will likely get mugged that side. There are only a few people that walk on the roads in Kampala up town. Majority of the people there are always driving, and only a few people walking.

It is always recommended to walk around with someone that knows the city dark spots very well. Generally the city is safe but there are always those dark spots that are known only by the city dwellers. Consider walking with a person who is well versed with the city. Majority of the people in Kampala have never been mugged, so that is a Kampala only known to a few, its better to take caution than being a statistic.

Besides those two, Kampala is generally a safe city as well as the rest of the country. It is better to walk around Uganda during the day, avoid night travel if you can. Keep your car doors locked and windows up while in traffic jam to avoid people snatching your electronics. When you put all these in mind, you will likely have a hustle free stay in Uganda.
