Self Drive To Semuliki National Park

Exploring Uganda’s Semuliki National Park by self-driving is an adventure of a lifetime. The park, located in the western region of the country, offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience Uganda’s natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and stunning landscapes.

Before embarking on your journey, it is essential to plan and prepare adequately for the trip. The following guide will help you make the most of your self-driving safari to Semuliki National Park.

Renting a Car With 4x4uganda Ltd

The first step is to rent a car for your journey. You can rent a vehicle in Kampala or the nearby town of Fort Portal. Self-drive safari vehicles are readily available from 4x4uganda Ltd. We offer reliable 4×4 vehicles that are also comfortable, and suitable for the terrain you will encounter.

Planning Your Route:

Semuliki National Park is approximately 370 kilometers (230 miles) from Kampala. The most direct route is via the Kampala-Fort Portal road, which takes about 6-7 hours. Alternatively, you can take the Masaka-Mbarara-Kasese road, which takes about 8-9 hours.

It is advisable to plan your route in advance and carry a map or GPS navigation device to help you navigate the roads. Also, ensure that you have enough fuel to get you to your destination, as gas stations can be scarce along some of the routes.

Park Entrances:

Before entering the park, you must clear the park entrance fees which are only paid either by mobile money or by card. Upon clearance of the park entrances, you will be assigned a guide who will take you around the accessible part of the park.

There is no additional park needed to visit the Sempaya hot springs.

Preparing for the Journey:

Self-driving to Semuliki National Park requires some preparation. Ensure that you carry enough water and snacks for the journey. You should also have a first aid kit and other essential items such as sunscreen, insect repellent, and binoculars.

It is also advisable to carry some local currency (Ugandan shillings) for small purchases or tipping the guides and rangers.

Driving Rules and Regulations:

When driving in Uganda, always remember to drive on the left side of the road. Observe all traffic rules and regulations, including speed limits and traffic signals.

Be alert to wildlife on the roads, especially during early mornings and late afternoons when animals are most active. Also, be cautious of potholes and road conditions that may be challenging to navigate.

Enjoying the Park:

Once you arrive at Semuliki National Park, there are several activities to enjoy. Semuliki is mainly a hiking destination. There are no game drives, all the activities are done on foot. If you are not comfortable walking, then Semuliki national park is not among the places you should consider.

Guided hikes through the forest are an excellent way to experience the park’s beauty. You can explore the hot springs, see the stunning landscapes, and watch birds such as the shoebill stork, African grey parrot, and Abyssinian ground hornbill.

In all your activities, remember to be respectful of the park’s natural environment and wildlife. Do not litter, leave no trace of your visit behind, and follow all park rules and regulations.

In conclusion, it is recommended to visit Semuliki national park either early in the morning or late in the evening due to the high temperatures of the hot springs.
