How Much Is Renting A Car In Uganda?

One of the most frequently asked questions among people who intend to rent a car in Uganda is; “How much is renting a car in Uganda”. Most of the people that ask this question rarely have a specific car in mind. They usually have a budget range. In most cases, it is the price that influences their choice of the car not necessarily their desired type of car.

This question is also asked mostly by people who are renting a car for the first time in Uganda. They usually do not have any local contact and if they have, the local contact also does not have any idea on how they rent a car in Uganda. In order to get an idea, they usually reach out to ask how much renting a car is. Unfortunately these kinds of people rarely intend to rent, they just want to know so that they can plan their future trips.

In order to answer the question, I need to clarify a few things. Renting a sino truck is also considered car rental but there is no website in Uganda that rents out Sino trucks at the moment. Most of the construction related cars are rarely rented out online. They usually operate by either referrals or tenders because of the amount of money that is usually involved in these kinds of rentals.

The sedans and offroad 4×4 cars are the most commonly rented out cars.  The cheapest car rental in Uganda goes for $35 per day. This is usually a 3 door Rav4. Other cars such as the Toyota wish are rented for just $30 but not a very popular option given its poor ground clearance. Among budget travelers, the Rav4 remains the best car rental option. However there are only a few car rental agencies that have the 3 door Rav4. Sometimes you might have to opt for the 5 door Rav4 which sometimes costs $40,$45, and $50 depending on the length of your hire and the time of the year.

The second most popular car rental option in Uganda is the Land cruiser Prado. These are the most budget land cruisers. They exist in three categories. The first is the 2700cc petrol Land cruiser Prado TX, the 3000cc diesel Land cruiser Prado Tx and the 3400cc petrol Land cruiser TZ. The most popular of these is the Land cruiser TZ. It has the most reliable engine and exceptional offroad power when compared to the others.

7 Seater Safari Land cruiser

These are usually the 1999 models. They are loved by car rental agencies in Uganda because they can easily be repaired anywhere. Their rental price ranges between $55 and $70 depending on the time of the year and the length of your rental. This same car is usually used for rooftop tent camping which often attracts an extra $20 per day depending on the time of the year and the length of your hire.

The less common car rental options are the Toyota Land cruiser GX and the Land cruiser V8. The Land cruiser GX is usually a 1998/9 model while the Land cruiser V8 is usually a 2003 to 2008 model. These range between $85 per day to $100 per day without rooftop tents.

What is the cost of renting Newer Cars in Uganda?

After learning of how old the most rented out cars are, the next question would be, aren’t there any car rental agencies that rent out newer cars of at least 2018 and above? The short answer is, there are only a few agencies willing to rent out such cars without a driver. The daily rental rate ranges between $250 and $450 per day. However it is also possible to get a 2014 or 2015 Land cruiser at $130 to $150 per day.

However unlike the old Land cruisers that are often on unlimited mileage basis, the newer Land cruisers often have limited mileage and they always require you to leave a security deposit behind. Unless you have some good amount at your disposal, you can stick to the older models since they have the most convenient hire terms. But if you wish to reduce the car breakdown risk, you can consider a 2015 model for your trip.
