Uganda’s New Chimpanzee Tracking Rates 2027

Along side the changes in the gorilla habitation permit rates, the Uganda wildlife Authority has released a new tariff for chimpanzee tracking and chimpanzee habituation experience. It should be noted that currently, Uganda wildlife Authority is in charge of two chimpanzee tracking destinations in Uganda, that is Kyambura gorge in Queen Elizabeth national park and Kibale forest national park.

Kibale forest is still the leading chimpanzee tracking destination in Uganda. The park is commonly known as the primate capital because of its high concentration of primates with in the same locality. As of the old tariff that is ending 2026; a chimpanzee permit for the foreign none residents has been going for $250 per permit, the chimpanzee habituation permit has been $300 per foreign none resident.

However effective 1st January 2027, a new tariff will be set in motion with revised chimpanzee tracking and habituation rates not only in Kibale forest national park but also in Kyambura gorge of Queen Elizabeth national park. The chimpanzee tracking rates in Budongo forest and Kalinzu, Bugoma forest and Kalinzu forest have remained the same. Here are the new Uganda wildlife Authority chimpanzee tracking rates.

Kibale Forest National Park Chimpanzee Tracking Rates 2027

A chimpanzee tracking permit for Kibale has been revised to $300 per foreign none resident effective 1st January 2027. This is a $50 increase from the previous rate. This is consistent with the former price revisions where they have increased the permit by $50. The foreign resident will continue as per the former rate. There has not been any increase in their chimpanzee permit rate. Foreign residents are those who are living in Uganda temporary. A work permit will be needed to prove your foreign residence status.

We also have a category that was introduced in the recent tariff. That is the Rest of Africa category. This is for tourists coming from Africa but not citizens of the East African community. Their chimpanzee tracking permit will be $100 per permit and Ugx 180,000 for East Africans.

The chimpanzee habituation permit will cost $400 per foreign none resident and $300 for foreign residents. Africans outside the East African community will pay $250 per chimpanzee habituation permit while East Africans will have to pay Ug 250,000 per permit. Unlike the East Africans, Africans and foreign residents; all chimpanzee tracking permits and chimpanzee habituation permits for foreign none residents have to be organized through a Uganda Tourism Board licensed tour operator.

Kyambura Gorge Chimpanzee Permits

Kyambura gorge is slowly becoming one of the popular chimpanzee tracking locations in Uganda. This is due to its strategic location in the heart of Queen Elizabeth national park. It is a thick almost underground forest in the middle of a Savannah plane. It is a forest that covers the gorge and for that reason, besides chimpanzee tracking, sometimes people simply wish to see what is in this tropical forest in the middle of a savannah plane.

Based on the current tariff, the Kyambura chimpanzee permit goes for $100 per foreign none resident but effective 1st January 2027, the price will be doubled to $200 per permit. However it remains the best place for East African to trek chimpanzees. A Chimpanzee permit for East African goes for Ugx 50,000; that is roughly $14 or less.

With these price revisions, Bugoma forest is currently the cheapest chimpanzee tracking destination in Uganda with $80 per permit. This is followed by Kalinzu forest whose permit goes for $130 per foreign none resident without any need to pay any extra park entrances. Budongo forest is close to $200 because of the the Murchison falls national park that can even shot up beyond $200 in case you spend more than 24 hours in the national park.
