Should You Go To Lake Mburo By Road Or Ferry?
Lake Mburo national park is located a few kilometers off the Masaka-Mbarara highway in the Lyantonde district. There are mainly three ways to get to Lake Mburo national park if you are coming from either Kampala or Entebbe:
Option 1: Entebbe to Lake Mburo Via Kisubi to Mpigi
This option helps you avoid going to Kampala. You instead drive from Entebbe to Kisubi, then connect to the Masaka-Mbarara highway through Mpigi. It will take you one and a half hours from Entebbe to Mpigi using this option.
There is often a common misconception of assuming that you always have to cross with a ferry at one point on your way to Lake Mburo. This is not true, the point that most people assume that there is a need for a ferry is before Lukaya, and there is a bridge there.
Option 2: Entebbe to Lake Mburo Via Busega
The second option is driving from Entebbe to Busega via the Entebbe Express highway, then connecting to Masaka Road. This is the most popular and fastest option. Even though there is often some traffic jam from the Busega roundabout up to the end of Kyengera town, the delay is often compensated by the swiftness of the Entebbe Express highway.
On a good day without thick traffic, it can take you four hours to get to lake Mburo. The best time to transfer from Entebbe to Lake Mburo is between 10 am and 12 pm. Most Ugandans work an 8/9 am to 5/6 pm job. Therefore most of the traffic is between 7:00 am and 9:30 am. In the evening, the traffic is thick between 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm
Option 3: Entebbe to Lake Mburo Via Buwaya
There is no direct ferry from Entebbe to Bukakata. You would have to first head to Kalangala and then connect from Kalangala to Bukakata. This would take you a full day. The possible option would be taking a ferry from Nakiwogo to Buwaye and then connecting to Masaka Road.
It is most recommended to use option two given the fact that there are some delays with the ferry. You might end up losing a full day if you use the ferry to transfer to Lake Mburo national park.
Things you can do late Evening in Lake Mburo
There are generally three activities that we would recommend for your evening in Lake Mburo; an evening game drive, a night game drive, or simply an evening walk in the park. Lake Mburo national park is one of the few places in Uganda where you have the opportunity to walk close to the wildlife.
The evening game drive will give you an opportunity to spot nocturnal animals in Lake Mburo national park. These include but are not limited to leopards, hyenas, and Genet cats among several other wildlife. However, it is very important to note that it is impossible to do a night game drive in a Rav4.
If you have plans for a night game drive in Lake Mburo national park, it is mandatory to hire a Land cruiser or any car of the size of the Land cruiser. Small SUVs cannot do night game drives.
